Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) adalah perguruan tinggi swasta terakreditasi "A"  yang berpusat di kampus III terpadu Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang, Jalan Raya Tlogomas 246 Kota Malang, Jawa Timur. Universitas yang berdiri pada tahun 1964 ini berinduk pada organisasi Muhammadiyah dan merupakan perguruan tinggi Muhammadiyah terbesar di Jawa Timur.UMM termasuk dalam jajaran PTS terkemuka di Indonesia bersama UII dan UMY. Oleh karena didominasi warna dinding putih, UMM sering disebut sebagai kampus putih

UMM merupakan salah satu universitas yang tumbuh cepat. Program-program yang didisain dengan cermat menjadikan UMM sebagai "The Real University", yaitu universitas yang benar-benar universitas dalam artian sebagai institusi pendidikan tinggi yang selalu komit dalam mengembangkan Tri Darma Perguruan Tinggi

Pada sekarang ini Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) menempati 3 lokasi kampus, yaitu kampus I di Jalan Bandung 1, kampus II di Jalan Bendungan Sutami 188 A dan kampus III di Jalan Raya Tlogomas 246. Kampus satu yang merupakan cikal bakalUMM, dan sekarang ini dikonsentrasikan untuk program Pasca Sarjana. Sedangkan kampus II yang dulu merupakan pusat kegiatan utama , sekarang di konsentrasikan sebagai kampus Fakultas Kedokteran dan Fakultas Ilmu Kesehatan. Sedangkan kampus III sebagai kampus terpadu dijadikan sebagai pusat sari seluruh aktivitas.

Pada awal berdiri, UMM baru membuka beberapa fakultas, yaitu fakultas Ilmu Sosial dan Ilmu Politik (FISIP), Hukum, Ekonomi dan Fakultas Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan (FKIP) serta jurusan Ilmu Agama (Cabang dari FAI Universitas Muhammadiyah Jakarta). Seiring dengan berjalannya waktu dan tuntutan zaman, maka UMM telah membuka fakultas-fakultas lain, yaitu Fakultas Teknik,Fakultas Pertanian, Fakultas Peternakan dan Perikanan, Fakultas Psikologi, Fakultas Kedokteran, Fakultas Ilmu Kesehatan terdiri dari D3 dan S1 Keperawatan, Farmasi, dan Fisioterapi serta Program Pasca Sarjana yang masing-masing mengembang beberapa jurusan. Jurusan atau program studi di UMM baik tingkat diploma 3, Sarjana, Magister maupun Doktoral 40 persen telah terakreditasi A BAN-PT.

Sebagai perguruan tinggi swasta terkemuka, UMM sudah memperoleh pengakuan dari pihak eksternal, yaitu dengan diraihnya Nilai Akreditasi A dari BAN-PT (2013), Bintang Dua dari QS Star, Terakreditasi KNAPP, Terakreditasi dari MTD Registered Public Accountants, Terakreditasi dari NQA Global Assurance, dan lain-lain. Prestasi yang diraih UMM antara lain: Peraih Anugerah Kampus Unggul (AKU) Jawa Timur sejak tahun 2008, Peraih Anugerah AKU Kartika kopertis VII Jawa Timur sebagai kampus Terunggul di Jawa Timur, Runner Up Adi Upaya Puritama Kelas II (untuk Rusunawa), Runner Up ASEAN Energy Award, peringkat 18 Indonesia pada Webometrics (bahkan pernah ranking 8 Indonesia), Peringkat ke-5 Dunia konten Rich Files webometrics, Peringkat 5 Indonesia untuk Repository webometrics, peringkat 19 Indonesia 4icu, , Peringkat 22 TesCa-Telkom, dan lain-lain. UMM juga memperoleh penghargaan dari pemerintah USA sebagai Host Peace Corps USA mulai tahun 2010.

UMM telah bekerjasama dengan pihak luar kampus, baik dari instansi dalam dan luar negeri. Untuk kerjasama luar negeri yang sedang berjalan antara lain: Erasmus Mundus, ACICIS, Peace Corps Amerika, BGP Engineering Belanda, AMINEF, AIESEC, EESTEC, USAID, AUSAID, American Corner, Iran Corner, dan lain-lain.

Untuk memberi layanan akademik yang memadai berbagai fasilitas telah disediakan untuk mahasiswa, mulai sarana akademik, non akademik, sarana publik dan sarana rekreatif. Proses pembelajaran dan admisitrasi didukung dengan fasilitas ICT dan sistem informasi manajemen yang memadai, sehingga membuat proses studi menjadi mudah, efisien, dan selalu mengikuti perkembangan jaman.

Kampus III merupakan kampus terbesar yang dimiliki UMM. Kampus ini terhampar indah dengan bangunan tertata apik sesuai topografi lahan berlembah yang indah menghijau dan dialiri Sungai Brantas. Di tengah-tengah kampus terdapat danau luas terbelah jembatan menuju gedung megah, asri, damai dan sejuk. Di seputar kampus III inilah dikelilingi beberapa unit bisnis UMM, yakni gedung pertunjukkan UMM Dome, hotel UMM Inn, UMM Bookstore, Rumah Sakit Pendidikan UMM, UMM farm, SPBU UMM, dan Bengkel Motor UMM. Sedangkan Medical Center dan Apotik UMM terletak di kawasan kampus II. UMM juga sedang merencanakan pembangunan apartemen di kawasan Taman Rekreasi Sengkaling yang sudah dibeli oleh UMM.

Perkembangan Ilmu Pengetahuan

          Ilmu pengetahuan muncul sebagai akibat daripada aktivitas untuk pemenuhan kebutuhan hidup manusia, baik kebutuhan jasmani maupun kebutuhan rohani. Perkembangan ilmu pengetahuan dan teknologi tidak lepas dari para ilmuwan terdahulu yang merubah pengetahuan menjadi inovasi teknologi dan pemikiran yang sangat berguna bagi kehidupan manusia. Kemajuan ilmu pengetahuan dan teknologi tidak dapat dipisahkan dari lembaga pendidikan tinggi. Dimana pada abad-20 peran ilmu pengetahuan dan teknologi sangat berarti bagi lembaga pendidikan tinggi. Sehingga pada abad-20 mampu mendorong perkembangan yang lebih cepat dalam bidang industri, informasi, komunikasi, transportasi dan pertanian.
          Ilmu pengetahuan dan teknologi di Indonesia mulai berkembang dimana ditandai dengan adanya perguruan tinggi dan pusat-pusat penelitian seperti Lembaga Ilmu Pengetahuan Indonesia (LIPI) dan juga telah membentuk Badan Pengkajiaan dan Penerapan Teknologi (BPPT). Dengan semakin berkembangnya ilmu pengetahuan dan teknologi di Indonesia, maka penyebaran informasi dan juga komunikasi di Indonesia pun sudah mulai berkembang.
            Informasi sangat diperlukan masyarakat Indonesia. Masyarakat Indonesia berhak atas informasi yang benar untuk mengatur kehidupannya dengan tepat dan membina dirinya. Manusia yang tidak memiliki pengetahuan tentang fakta dan tidak sempat memahami pandangan yang berbeda-beda, tidak dapat mengadakan pilihan secara tanggung jawab.
            Penyampaian suatu informasi di Indonesia disebarkan melalui media massa seperti surat kabar, majalah, radio, televisi dan internet. Teknologi informasi selain membawa dampak yang sangat menguntungkan bagi manusia, teknologi informasi dapat juga menyebabkan terjadinya polusi atau pengotoran informasi.
Selain daripada berkembangnya teknologi informasi di Indonesia teknologi komunikasi pun sudah mengalami perubahan yang sangat cepat. Dimana pertama sekali perkembangan komunikasi di Indonesia ditandai dengan sambungan telepon lokal, dan kemudian berkembang menjadi sambungan jarak jauh dan juga membangun sistem komunikasi yang mampu menghubungkan dan menyebarkan informasi keseluruh wilayah Indonesia dan seluruh dunia secara efektif dan efisien.
            Pada masa sekarang ini proses komunikasi di Indonesia sudah mengalami perubahan yang sangat cepat, sebagai akibat perubahan teknologi komunikasi. Dengan adanya kemudahan untuk memperoleh informasi dan komunikasi tentu akan meningkatkan tingkat pengetahuan dan ketrampilan bangsa Indonesia itu sendiri.
Perkembangan ilmu pengetahuan sudah merambah ke segala jenis cakupan, mulai ilmu tentang bumi, angkasa dan masih banyak lagi. Banyak sekali inovasi-inovasi yang muncul sekarang ini, misalnya saja kloning. jika di pandang dari ilmu filsafat, maka ilmu tersebut terbentuk dari pemikiran manusia tentang dirinya dan sekitarnya serta berusaha untuk berfikir sejauh mungkin. Perkembangan ilmu pengetahuan harus bisa membuat manusia menjadi lebih baik.

The development of information technology in Indonesia is strongly influenced by the ability of the human resource in understanding the components of information technology (hardware, software, computer network systems, and telecommunications systems).
